one of the most dangerous. The mountain is located in Nepal along a 55-kilometer (34-mile) ridge just east of the Gandaki River, which has carved one of the deepest river gorges in the world. The gorge separates Annapurna from Dhaulagiri, the seventh tallest mountain in the world.
On June 3, 1950, the French climbers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal reached the summit of Annapurna, making it the first eight-thousand meter peak ever successfully climbed. There are 14 “eight-thousanders” in all, a number that pushes some climbers to the point of obsession. It’s big enough that only the most ambitious consider climbing all of them, but small enough that doing so over a lifetime still seems possible.
Herzog and Lachenal first attempted Annapurna’s northwest face—they called it the cauliflower face (shown in shadow in the image above)—then switched over to the avalanche-prone north face when they realized the northwest face was too rugged for their porters. The extremely steep south face, a wall of rock that rises 3,000 meters (9,800 feet), is said to be one of the most difficult climbs in the world.
Annapurna is the only 8,000 meter-peak to be conquered on the first try—and Herzog and Lachenal did it without bottled oxygen. However, the feat came with a high price. Since they wore only thin, leather boots up to the summit, the expedition’s doctor had to amputate all of Herzog and Lachenal’s toes after extreme frostbite and then gangrene set in during the descent. Herzog lost all of his fingers as well. Lachenal had asked Herzog during the summit climb: “Do you think it is worth it?”
The rocks that make up Annapurna’s summit—limestone formed at the bottom of a warm ocean—are a reminder of the powerful tectonic forces that pushed up the world’s highest mountains. Other eight-thousanders with limestone near the summits include Everest and Dhaulagiri.
Only 191 people had successfully ascended Annapurna as of 2012, fewer than any other eight-thousanders. With a fatality rate of 32 percent, no other eight-thousander is deadlier.
Nov 4: Chitwan National Park (CNP) has recorded a sharp plunge in its revenue collection since the past few months, clearly indicating the adverse effects of the country's current chaotic situation.
According to the national park's information officer Tika Ram Poudel, the revenue collection from August to October this year has been recorded at Rs 102.3 million, which is a two-thirds dip from the revenue collected in the same period last year.
The CNP had collected Rs 306.8 million in the first quarter of the previous fiscal year. A statement released by the national park claimed that it had collected Rs 104.14 million in August alone last year, which is greater than the combined revenue collected in the first quarter of this year.
The catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake of April 25, coupled with over two months of Madhes protests and the economic blockade imposed by India has contributed to 80% decline in tourists visiting the national park. The consequences are clearly visible in the tourism industry, which is also reflected by the sharp dip in the park's revenue collection.
Half of the revenue collected from the park is invested in its buffer zone. The buffer zone consists of human settlements and arable lands adjoining the CNP. There are a total of 21 consumer groups in Nawalparasi, Parsa and Makawanpur districts, all of whom border the CNP. Their budget allocation is fully dependent on revenue collected from the park.
CNP, the first national park of the country, is well known throughout the world as the habitat for endangered one-horned rhinos and Royal Bengal tigers. Considering its contribution in national revenue collection, stakeholders and officials have been pointing out that the diminishing number of tourists and the country's current political situation will have severe impact in the country's economy.

Nov 4, 2015- A leader of Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) has reached the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland, to inform the international community about the Madhes protests and the government’s response to the agitation.
SLMM leader Devendra Yadav met with representatives of various countries in order to lobby them about Nepal’s Madhes issues at a time when the OHRCH’s UPR (Universal Periodic Review) session is underway.
He staged a protest outside the high commissioner office by burning a symbol of the new constitution of Nepal, saying that the constitution is discriminatory against Madhesis even as the UPR working group was reviewing human rights records of the UN member states.
He claimed that Nepal government used force against universal norms of human rights in Madhes and killed the protesters. Yadav is joint general secretary of Sadbhawana Party, a constituent of the agitating SLMM.
Sabhawana Party General Secretary Manish Kumar Suman said that Yadav went to Geneva to inform the international community about the government suppression in Madhes.
“I have informed the world representatives about the state excesses in Madhes,” said Y adav from Geneva. “Various representatives are questioning Nepal government on the issue.”
A delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa is representing Nepal government in Geneva.

UCPN (Maoist) senior leader Bhattarai quit the party in September and has been working to form a new political force.
Though the leaders have not used the word resignation, Devendra Paudel, one of those who quit, said right after submitting their letter to the party that they are no longer associated with the UCPN (Maoist).
Paudel, Bhattarai's spouse Hisila Yami, Ram Chandra Jha, Ram Rijhan Yadav, Ganga Narayan Shrestha, Nawaraj Subedi, Khimlal Devkota, Ram Kumar Sharma, Bhim Prasad Gautam, Kalpana Dhamala, Swanam Saathi, Nandan Kumar Dutta, Kumar Paudel, Devendra Parajuli, Chinak Kurmi and Balwati Sharma are among those quitting the UCPN (Maoist) Tuesday. About a dozen of them were members of the first Constituent Assembly (CA).
"We have been lobbying for a long time for a new political force within the party, but the leadership seemed reluctant to transform the party into something new," Paudel said. "Thus we decided to quit the party and join the movement led by Bhattarai."
Some lawmakers, including Prabhu Sah, Ram Karki, Bhakti Pandey, Shree Jagebu and Dhani Ram Paudel, who were in Bhattarai's camp in the past, have not quit the party yet.
The leaders quitting the UCPN (Maoist) have said that they will hold a campaign in all 75 districts to form the new political force.
They have blamed the party for not convening a meeting of its central committee since nearly a year back. "We could not remain mute spectators to the deviation of the UCPN (Maoist) and its leadership ignoring our demand for change," Ganga Narayan Shrestha told Republica. According to the leaders, the UCPN (Maoist) has not summoned a central committee meeting since last December.
Over half a dozen of the party leaders had reached the UCPN (Maoist) party office at Parisdanda to submit their signatures and their justification letter to the party. On receiving the letter, UCPN (Maoist) chief secretary Hitraj Pandey said that he will inform the party chairman about the development.

Apple's flagship iPhone 6 smartphone is currently on sale under Verizon at $120 off its standard price, with the offer available to Verizon subscribers until dec 21.
The offer falls right until Father's Day, which means that the smartphone could be an excellent gift for fathers in the United States. The offer is such a good one, however, that all customers that can avail of it and are looking to acquire a new smartphone should at least think about taking up Verizon in its offer.
Until June 21, Verizon subscribers can take advantage of the $200 off offer for the iPhone 6 when they upgrade their current subscription or add a new line to their accounts. Essentially, this means that Verizon customers can get the entry-level 16GB iPhone 6 at no cost, as that version of Apple's flagship smartphone has a cost of $199.
Verizon subscribers can choose to acquire iPhone 6 units with larger capacities though, with the $200 off applied to the price of the smartphones. Unfortunately, the offer does not seem to extend to the iPhone 6 Plus.
To take advantage of the offer, customers will only have to enter the promo code DADNGRAD in the promotional code box that will appear during checkout. The $200 discount will automatically be applied.

Many news and details never really came out to the public mind. Nobody is clear about what happened but it is believed that Dipendra had been drinking heavily, $mo*ked large quantities of weed, He then m!$beh@*ved with a guest which resulted in his father telling him to leave the event. The drunken Dipendra was taken to his room by his brother and cousin. After an hour, he returned to the event with guns and started to shoot at everyone in the party.

Nearly a year ago, Estée Lauder CEO Fabrizio Freda told us that the best way to compete with skin care brands coming out of South Korea — currently the world's hub of innovation in that arena — was to embrace its trends and technology. Freda's team had seen South Korea's domination in skin care coming for some time: Clinique, an Estée Lauder-owned brand, was one of the first to bring BB creams to the US.
Now Estée Lauder is drawing closer to the source of South Korea's advancements in skin care technology. The company is taking a stake in Have & Be Co. Ltd., the owner of Do The Right Thing and Dr. Jart+, one of the first skin care brands to start sponsoring runway shows at New York Fashion Week. Estée Lauder has not at this point disclosed the terms of the agreement.
The deal, which should close by December, marks Lauder's first investment in a Korean cosmetics brand. The company has in recent months been working to align itself to Korea's beauty scene through other means, though. This summer, for instance, it signed the rainbow-haired model Irene Kim, who was born in Seattle and moved in middle school to Seoul, as a "global brand contributor."
No doubt we'll hear more about this investment next week, when Estée Lauder gives its first financial update of the fiscal year. It comes at a good time, though: In August, the company's skin care sales were down, thanks to decreased consumption in Hong Kong and, yes, Korea.

They have webbed feet which, though not used to propel the animal through the water, allow them to make fast turns and sudden moves in the water or initiate swimming.
Webbed feet are an advantage in shallower water, where the animal sometimes moves around by walking. Crocodiles have a palatal flap, a rigid tissue at the back of the mouth that blocks the entry of water.
The palate has a special path from the nostril to the glottis that bypasses the mouth. The nostrils are closed during submergence.
Like other archosaurs, crocodilians are diapsid, although their post-temporal fenestrae are reduced. The walls of the braincase are bony, but lack supratemporal and postfrontal bones.
Their tongues are not free, but held in place by a membrane that limits movement; as a result, crocodiles are unable to stick out their tongues.
Crocodiles have smooth skin on their bellies and sides, while their dorsal surfaces are armoured with large osteoderms. The armoured skin has scales and is thick and rugged, providing some protection. They are still able to absorb heat through this armour, as a network of small capillaries allows blood through the scales to absorb heat.
Crocodilian scales have pores believed to be sensory in function, analogous to the lateral line in fishes. They are particularly seen on their upper and lower jaws. Another possibility is that they are secretory, as they produce an oily substance which appears to flush mud off
“There is a bit of discussion on the net about it, but no one can confirm the origin of the message or its authenticity. There is no news coverage despite the fact that this sort of thing would make big headlines, and as the messages started yesterday we could probably assume that any executions may have already occurred. The mission agency and advocate for martyrs “Open Doors” also has no knowledge of such an event, so it is likely that this is a hoax.
In July 2007, 23 Korean missionaries were captured by the Taliban and 1 executed in July 2007, with the threat that the remaining 22 would be executed if demands were not met immediately. The situation was diffused (I don’t have the details I’m sorry – please post them here if you do), but it sounds like the text message could be a re-run of the old one.
It’s a good reminder that we need to pray for our missionaries overseas, but at the same time please make a point of praying about the fact that if this is not true, then a message is going around the world that is likely to stir up a lot of anger against Afghanistan. While such events are a reality, if it’s not happening this time then this is a lie designed to reinforce in ‘good Christian’ minds that Afghans are bad. That’s a hate crime.”
Note that this was posted on 28th February, 2009 and today is 9th April, 2013 or was I somehow transported to the future? What the person(s) who created this message hope(s) to achieve, I do not know; and why is this message being re-broadcast four years later? There are a number of links I would have posted, but no thanks to terrible internet, I cannot. However, you can use google to get more information.
